ANSI/TIA-606-D
Updated 2026-10-25
Data records
- Under clause 4.2.1 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021), class 1 covers a premises served by a single equipment room, with no telecommunications rooms, backbone cabling or outside plant to administer.
- Under clause 4.2.2 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021), class 2 covers a single building or tenant served by one or more telecommunications spaces and adds administration of backbone cabling, multi-element bonding systems and firestopping.
- Under clause 4.2.3 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021), class 3 covers a campus of buildings with outside plant cabling between them and adds building and inter-building cable identifiers.
- Under clause 4.2.4 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021), class 4 covers infrastructure spread over several campuses or sites and adds a campus or site identifier, with inter-campus elements optional.
- Clause 4.6 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) permits an alternative label in the form of a cross-reference code, such as a plain numeric code, a bar code or an RFID tag, that links to the identifier in the record, provided each label reads unambiguously.
- Clauses 5.1.12 to 5.1.22 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) assign identifiers to the primary and secondary bonding busbars and the bonding conductors between them, require those busbars to be labeled on the front, and require the telecommunications bonding conductor, the bonding backbone, backbone bonding conductors and conductors landing on those busbars to be labeled at both ends.
- Clause 5.1.2.1 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) recommends locating cabinets and racks by a room grid in rooms with several rows, taking the floor tile grid where there is an access floor, and clause 5.1.2.6 requires each cabinet and rack to be labeled on the front and the rear.
- Clause 5.1.5 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) builds a cable identifier from the port identifiers at its two ends, listing first the end nearer the main cross-connect, and requires the cable to be labeled at both ends just before it enters the termination hardware.
- Clause 5.1.7 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) requires every horizontal (Cabling Subsystem 1) link to carry an identifier unique within the administration system, an element required in all four classes, written either as a pair of panel port identifiers or as an outlet form tied to the serving space.
- Clause 4.4 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) lets a label carry only the part of an identifier needed within its own space, and requires the delimiters used on labels to be applied consistently across the enterprise.
- Table 3 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) defines the named fields from which identifiers are assembled, including the campus or site, the building, the floor, the telecommunications space, the grid coordinates of a cabinet or rack, the position of a panel within it and the port.
- Clauses 5.1.8 to 5.1.11 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) make identifiers for equipment and telecommunications outlets, consolidation points, zone distribution area ports and horizontal splices optional, while still requiring consolidation points, zone distribution area ports and splices to be labeled.
- Clauses 5.1.3 and 5.1.4 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) identify each patch panel by its position within its cabinet or frame and each port by its number on the panel, and require every port and every termination block position to be labeled.
- Clause 5.1.1 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) requires each telecommunications space to have an identifier unique within its building, formed from floor and space fields, and to be labeled inside the room where people working there can see it.
- Clause 4.5 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) offers two parallel identifier formats, one backward compatible with ANSI/TIA-606-A and one compatible with ISO/IEC TR 14763-2-1, which differ in how they mark location and function; the identifier tables give both formats element by element.
- Clause 6.1.4 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) gives each firestop installation an identifier and requires a label on each side of the penetrated barrier close to the firestop material.
- Clause 5.1.7.3 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) requires each end of a horizontal cable to be labeled with its link identifier close to the end of the jacket, within a distance set by that clause, and requires outlets in commercial, industrial, data center and multi-tenant premises to carry the link identifier on the connector, faceplate or multi-user outlet.
- Clauses 6.2.3 and 6.2.4 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) give the primary and secondary bonding busbar records a field pointing to the location of test results, citing resistance to ground as the example. Not settled.
- Clause 5.2 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) requires a record for each horizontal link that holds its identifier, its cable type, where its outlet is and what connector the outlet uses, the length of the cable, the kind of cross-connect hardware, and a history of service on the link.
- Clauses 6.1 and 6.2 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) add, for class 2, identifiers for backbone cables, backbone ports and firestop locations, and records for each telecommunications space, backbone cable, primary bonding busbar, secondary bonding busbar and firestop location.
- Clauses 7 and 8 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) add building, inter-building cable and campus or site identifiers, with building records holding the address, the list of telecommunications spaces and access details, and site records listing the buildings on the site.
- The service record that clause 5.2 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) requires for each horizontal link is illustrated with an installation test result followed by later re-termination and re-test, and the clause names the location of test results as an optional field.
- Clause 1 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) treats administration as five linked tasks: giving each component an identifier, setting the content of each record, defining linkages between records, defining reports over groups of records, and setting graphical and symbol conventions.
- Clause 13 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) refers automated infrastructure management to ANSI/TIA-5048, recommends such systems for the larger classes and for sites with limited or remote staff, and expects them to run under operational discipline with regular auditing.
- Informative Annex A of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) extends the scheme to patch cords, equipment cords and direct cables between equipment, and offers a simpler two-label method for cords that are not administered.
- Informative Annex C of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) sets out drawing conventions, from campus plans through floor layouts, room elevations, typical details and schedules, as an alternative to the United States National CAD Standard; Annex D is a bibliography.
- The foreword of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) records that the informative annex on administering remote powering in the previous edition became a normative clause, harmonized with the first addendum to ANSI/TIA-5048, while the rest of the structure carries over.
- Clause 4.2 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) defines four classes of administration that grow with the size of the infrastructure, and its identifier tables mark each element as required or optional for each class.
- Clause 10.2.2 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) assigns a color to each type of termination field for use where termination fields are color-coded, and requires any other scheme an enterprise adopts to be applied consistently.
- Clause 10.3.2 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) recommends color on optical fiber connectors or boots to preserve polarity and to distinguish fiber types and angled physical contact terminations, following the scheme of ANSI/TIA-568.3.
- ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) allows identifiers that remain fully backward compatible with ANSI/TIA-606-A or that follow the format of ISO/IEC TR 14763-2-1, and it accepts bonding terms from the current or earlier revisions of ANSI/TIA-607.
- The introduction to ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) allows pathways, cabling and firestopping to be recorded separately, for example by different contractors, and advises the system owner to coordinate one uniform method across them.
- ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) sets no electrical or optical performance limits; its subject matter is identifiers, labels, records, reports, color-coding and drawings, so field test results enter its scheme only as content of the records it defines.
- Clause 2 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) relies on ANSI/TIA-568.0 for the generic cabling topology behind its link and color-coding scheme, on ANSI/TIA-568.3 for optical fiber polarity and connector color, on ANSI/TIA-5048 for automated infrastructure management, and on ISO/IEC TR 14763-2-1 for its international identifier format.
- Clause 9 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) provides optional identifiers for outdoor spaces such as maintenance holes, handholes and pedestals and for intra-space, building, entrance and outside plant pathways, with a table of optional element codes.
- Clause 11 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) recommends labels that are legible, visible during normal maintenance and durable against moisture, heat and ultraviolet light for the life of the labeled part, and requires label text to be machine generated.
- Clause 4.1 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) requires an administration system to provide a way to locate the record for any identifier, and expects specialized software to produce reports over groups of records.
- Clause 12 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) recommends that each record type be indexed by its element identifier and carry a last-updated time stamp, and requires reports that list every record containing a selected identifier.
- Clause 14 of ANSI/TIA-606-D (2021) requires class 2 systems, and systems in the two larger classes, that support remote powering to administer cable bundles, with bundle records covering the powered cables and their allocated power and cable records covering construction, conductor gauge and pair or fiber count.
