ANSI/TIA-568.5-1
Updated 2026-10-25
Data records
- ANSI/TIA-568.5-1 (2024) adds a ground-plane set-up for measuring unshielded cable and a rule for excluding negligible disturbers from power sums to Annex A, and rewrites informative Annex B with a power class table, a length relation and a worked example.
- For cable, ANSI/TIA-568.5-1 (2024) states DC resistance by category instead of by conductor gauge in clause 6.6.1, revises the cable conversion loss and far-end alien crosstalk requirements, and adds clause 6.6.15 with a DC resistance limit for cord cable.
- ANSI/TIA-568.5-1 (2024) revises the channel and permanent link DC loop resistance limits in clauses 6.3.1 and 6.5.1 of the parent and adds informative elevated-temperature values, splits the equal level transverse conversion transfer loss requirement by category, and replaces the far-end alien crosstalk power sum with PSAACRF.
- ANSI/TIA-568.5-1 (2024) changes the connecting hardware alien crosstalk power-sum requirements in clauses 6.8.16 and 6.8.18 of the parent from a single flat limit to a capped frequency function, each with a new informative table.
- ANSI/TIA-568.5-1 (2024) corrects errors in the transmission requirements of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) found after publication, marking deletions and additions against the parent text.
- In the topology clauses of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022), the word connector means a mated connection rather than a single plug or jack.
- For alien crosstalk, Annex A of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) uses the ANSI/TIA-568.2 arrangement in which disturbing cables or connectors surround the victim.
- Annex A of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) calibrates the measurement fixture with open, short and load artifacts and with thru artifacts between each pairing of analyzer ports.
- Annex A of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) bases laboratory measurement on a balun-less vector network analyzer whose single-ended ports are converted to mixed-mode results, while allowing equivalent methods and the ANSI/TIA-568.2-D and ANSI/TIA-1183-A methods with the single pair treated as pair one.
- Annex A of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) requires mixed-mode results to be post-processed to the standard differential and common-mode reference impedances following ANSI/TIA-1183.
- In ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022), Annex A on cabling and component test procedures is normative, while the annexes on power over data lines, modeling configurations, application support and the bibliography are informative.
- Informative Annex D of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) maps both single-pair categories to the 10BASE-T1L and 10BASE-T1S Ethernet applications.
- Clause 6.7 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) requires each cable in a bundled assembly to keep meeting the cable requirements after bundling.
- Clause 6.6 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) specifies cable transmission on a fixed-length sample, with requirements chosen so that full-reach channels and permanent links of each category can be assured.
- Clause 5.3.6 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) requires single-pair cable to be marked with its category in addition to any listing marks.
- Clause 6.6.6 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) requires cable insertion loss to be measured at, or corrected to, a reference temperature, with different correction rates for unshielded and screened cable.
- Clause 4 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) defines two single-pair cabling categories that share one frequency range and differ in channel reach, the longer-reach category being SP1-1000. The shorter-reach category is SP1-400.
- For channels, ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) leaves mutual capacitance, capacitance unbalance and characteristic impedance unspecified and treats coupling attenuation as assured by compliant components and correct installation.
- Clause 6.3 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) lists the transmission parameters a channel must meet: DC loop resistance and its unbalance, return loss, insertion loss, transverse conversion loss and equal level transverse conversion transfer loss for unshielded cabling, propagation delay, and power-sum alien near-end and far-end crosstalk.
- Clause 6.2.1 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) caps the number of mated connections in a channel for each category and limits the share of the channel length that may be cords.
- Clause 5.3.5 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) includes a cold-temperature bend test of the cable, a qualification test rather than an installed minimum bend radius, which the standard does not give.
- ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) requires connecting hardware to operate over a stated temperature range, to be protected from damage, moisture and corrosives, and to meet the reliability requirements of the IEC 63171 connector series.
- Clause 6.8 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) sets mated transmission requirements for outlets, patch panels, consolidation and transition points and cross-connect blocks, covering DC resistance, return loss, insertion loss, conversion losses, transfer impedance and alien crosstalk power sums.
- ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) uses shall for mandatory requirements and treats should, may and desirable as interchangeable advisory terms.
- Clause 5.4 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) allows cord cable a wider range of conductor sizes than horizontal cable, still excluding copper-clad conductors, and subjects screened cords to a flex-life test after which transfer impedance must still be met.
- ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) requires outlets to be securely mounted, unused cable ends to sit behind a faceplate identified for telecommunications, cross-connect hardware to support patching, ANSI/TIA-606 circuit identification and test access, and all hardware to maintain conductor polarity.
- Clause 6.3.1 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) sets a maximum channel DC loop resistance for each category at a reference temperature and refers power delivery guidance to a separate TIA telecommunications systems bulletin.
- ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) sets no field test requirements of its own: clause 6.1 writes its limits for laboratory measurement and refers field testing to ANSI/TIA-5071, the companion document on field test instruments and measurements for single-pair cabling.
- The higher-frequency single-pair cable specifications IEC 61156-11 and IEC 61156-12 appear in ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) only as references; the standard defines no category above its own low-frequency range.
- Clause 5.3 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) describes horizontal cable as one balanced twisted pair with thermoplastic insulation and jacket and an optional shield, over a stated range of solid or stranded copper conductor sizes, with copper-clad conductors excluded and mechanical tests taken from IEC 61156-13.
- Clause 6.3.7 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) builds the channel insertion loss limit from the cable insertion loss function scaled to the full category reach plus a term for each mated connection; it gives no rule for scaling the limit to a shorter installed length.
- Clause 2 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) draws on ANSI/TIA-568.2, ANSI/TIA-606 and ANSI/TIA-1183, ASTM cable test methods, the IEC 61156 single-pair cable series, IEC coupling attenuation methods, the IEC 63171 connector series and UL 444.
- Clause 5.5.4 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) recommends the IEC 63171-1 two-way connector at the equipment outlet and throughout the channel, and a figure assigns each conductor insulation color to a connector pin.
- Clause 6.5 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) applies the channel parameter set to the permanent link, with the insertion loss, DC loop resistance and propagation delay limits reflecting the shorter link cable length and lower connection count.
- Clause 6.4.1 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) sets a lower connection count and a shorter cable length for the permanent link than for the channel, with the end connections counted inside the link and the tester cords outside it.
- Power over data lines is informative in ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022): Annex B explains that maximum channel length is limited by the more restrictive of two constraints, the channel DC resistance allowed for the power class or the application insertion loss.
- Clause 5.5.8 of ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) requires every component of a screened single-pair system to be shielded and every shield bonded according to ANSI/TIA-607.
- ANSI/TIA-568.5 (2022) notes that meeting the cable and connector transfer impedance requirements is not enough on its own to assure link or channel performance, and requires cable shields to be terminated to connector shields following the manufacturer's instructions.
